Psychotherapy, or simply "therapy," is a tool for the process of change, and, in this process, your therapist partners with you to bring about the changes you are seeking. Therapy helps you clarify what is really standing between you and the life you want to be living, recognize what is within your control to change, and identify and evaluate options available to you to make those changes.

Therapy is an encouraging, judgment-free, and confidential sanctuary where you can safely and openly talk about sensitive topics like feelings, hopes, disappointments, self-identity, relationships, problems, and fears. It's a place to learn about yourself and to discover how to make desired changes in yourself or your situation. Therapy, being above all a relationship, involves a collaboration between you and your therapist to bring about healing and a sense of authenticity that honors all the parts of yourself.

These questions may help you to clarify whether to seek professional guidance:

    1. Is something about myself, another person, or a situation causing me ongoing emotional pain (such as anxiety, sadness, anger, hopelessness, grief or frustration)?

    2. Have my efforts at coping with this situation on my own (or with the advice of family or friends) not brought about the results I am seeking?

    3. Am I having difficulty reaching my goals and becoming the person I want to be?

    4. Are persistent or troubling feelings or thoughts (or my own behavior patterns) affecting my ability to successfully engage in my day-to-day life, in relationships, or on the job?

    5. Am I having trouble letting go of events from my past that keep me from enjoying my life in the present?

In such situations, your therapist can help you clarify what is troubling you and provide you with help in restoring emotional well-being.
